RED TABS, is a fictionalized autobiographical account of the author’s candidacy at the United States Army’s Officer Candidate School during the build up for the Vietnam War. It is not a memoir—but an action-packed novel combing numerous real life characters and events into single characters in the novel.

Officer Candidate School urban legends, actual events and the daily life of candidates are reflected in the fast-paced chapters.

RED TABS, is a descriptive insider’s account of what really went on in the OCS Program, where as high as 60% of the candidates dropped out or were ran out of the school before graduation.

The protagonist is a young Special Forces sergeant (Green Beret) who has just finished eighteen months of very difficult training and then is sent to another very difficult military school designed to produce officers for the war.

Male bonding, honor, trauma, action, jealousy and overcoming extreme hardships are all parts of the novel. There are currently 160,000 OCS officers on active duty, retired or discharged in the United States. They are and were the true “citizen soldiers” who have defended this great Nation from day one.

This is one of the better Vietnam era books I have read. It took me back to the Summer/Fall of 1966 when I was in one of the early classes in Signal OCS at Fort Gordon. Our TAC was from the Artillery OCS and an Airborne-Ranger LT so we mimicked a lot of what was written here in terms of harassment and training. I wish I had been able to read a book like this before I went for the heads-up advice. Never knew anybody at the high or low ends of leadership depicted here, but did know some that approached them-especially the low end. This book is an excellent treatise on what leadership should be.

(On a personal note: I entered OCS the week I turned 19 and had less than a year in the Army. Had applied at the behest of my AIT CO since I was my radio class honor graduate. After making Intermediate, I was tops in academics but Way low in leadership. Decided commanding others in the way OCS seemed to demand was not a strong point for me. So, I put in my withdrawal letter and headed for Vietnam. Spent 19 months as an forward operations radio operator in the 1/4th Armored Cavalry, 1st ID. Was discharged the week I turned 21 and went on with life:-)

Really enjoyed the book.

RED TABS eBook Donald E Zlotnik Reviews

This was an excellent book written by someone who has "been there and done that". Stayed up until 330 AM to finish reading in one sitting. It mirrored my own experience from 1966 at Ft Sill OCS in so many ways. I wonder if he had experience with my Tac Officer Lt Moody and our alcoholic 1st Sergeant MOH winner from WW2. From Carrying the rock up MB-4, to the March To Mess to agony of being lower class was portrayed so well it transported me back to those days of "hanging around" with the Upperclassmen to ... "Lima Battery mandatory PT formation ... 5 minutes!" Will read it again ... great read!
Great read from front to back, scenes are portrayed with great detail making it hard to put down. Would suggest it to anyone interested in attending OCS or people that what to know what it takes to be an outstanding officer in the Army.
I have read all of Mr. Zlotnik's books. I find them interesting entertaining and at time thought provoking. You will enjoy the read.
This book, although a work of fiction is based on many actual stories and events in the life of an OCS candidate. It's a nice smooth read and tough to put down once you start. The story brought back many memories of lessons learned during my 6 months in OCS at Ft Sill. It should be required reading for any young soldier who is considering an application to OCS.
I honestly could not put this book down. I never been to OCS being enlisted all of my years. But the dates and times knowing the uniform so well and everything else brings back many memories. Many thanks for the good read.
Very well written on a subject that is close to my heart since I completed OCS at Fort Sill a year prior to the author's attendance. The initial events in the book are uneasy reading and leave a less than savoy taste in my mouth. Also, the impression of Special Forces being Godlike is somewhat exaggerated, not meaning to take anything away from those warriors because they are just "next to Godlike". Otherwise, the author brings back a lot of fond, and not so fond, memories. Well worth buy buying and reading.
As a graduate of the Army Field Artillery Officer Candidate School in 1968, about two years after the novel's setting, I found it to be a very real depiction of the daily life of an officer candidate. The treatment of lower- and middle-class candidates by upper-class candidates, the "Jark" runs up to the top of MB4, the "square" meals are all accurate and mirror my experience. It was an extraordinarily difficult six months but it did get better as you progressed from lower- to upper-class (senior candidates wore red tabs). The academics were straightforward, but the leadership environment was clearly a "mind game" calculated to determine who wanted a commission badly enough to put up with the harassment. I found it all to be worthwhile and to this day follow certain habits developed in OCS more than 45 years ago.
